Our story

Established for transformative Christian higher education

Prince Mahlalengangeni founded the Eswatini College of Theology in 1988, partnering with the Ministry of Education and Assemblies of God USA to launch the nation's first bachelor's-level theological institution. Over time that vision expanded to include psychology, psychosocial counselling, community development, and peace studies so graduates can serve the whole person.

1988 – 1995: Vision takes root

Beginning with five students and a single building, ECT quickly expanded dormitories, classrooms, and a chapel through support from Assemblies of God congregations abroad. Early graduates returned as lecturers, strengthening academic foundations.

1996 – 2015: Growing reach

Affiliation with Global University (ICI University) broadened accreditation, attracting students from across Southern and Central Africa and enabling more comprehensive ministry training.

2016 – present: Innovating for communities

Responding to emerging needs, ECT added psychology and counselling pathways, expanded online and part-time platforms, and continues equipping leaders who catalyse transformation in churches and society.

Brief history

From vision to vibrant campus

Established in 1988 under the leadership of Prince Mahlalengangeni and in partnership with the Ministry of Education, ECT was created to answer Eswatini's need for credible, degree-level Christian training. Early support from Assemblies of God USA and Rev. Jimmy Swaggart secured the campus property, funded the first buildings, and housed pioneering missionaries who helped launch the college.

Beginning with just five students, the college quickly expanded its facilities in Ezulwini—adding dormitories, classrooms, administration offices, and a chapel through the generosity of Assemblies of God congregations in the United States. Graduates from those formative years soon returned as lecturers, strengthening the institution's academic foundation and community reach.

Affiliation with Global University (formerly ICI University) broadened ECT's credentials and opened pathways for internationally recognised programmes. Today the college offers psychology and counselling alongside its theology degrees, and delivers learning across full-time, part-time, and online platforms to equip leaders for churches and communities across the continent.

  • Founding partnership in 1988 positioned ECT as Eswatini's first bachelor's-level theological college.
  • Missionary collaboration and support from Rev. Jimmy Swaggart enabled rapid campus development at Ezulwini.
  • Thousands of graduates now serve as senior pastors, counsellors, educators, NGO leaders, and statespeople across Southern and Central Africa.
  • Post-2020 programme diversification integrates counselling, psychology, and peace studies to meet emerging ministry and societal needs.
